Trailing 2-0 in the last inning of their NJCAA Division I World Series opener, Galveston College rallied for three runs to stun Walters State Community College, 3-2, on Monday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama, and advance to the next round of the national tournament.

The Whitecaps (44-13) will face the winner of the Indian River State College (51-9) and Hutchinson Community College (47-10) matchup on Wednesday at 3 p.m. HCC shutout Connors State, 8-0, and will take on IRSC on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

“We expected a tough game and that’s what we got,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “我们的球员再次以一种伟大的方式度过了难关。 他们表现得非常成熟，在比赛中保持头脑清醒，从不放弃。 It’s good to get our first win in the World Series and advance to the next round. Whitecaps sophomore outfielder Jessica Munro hit a two-run, game-tying single to score sophomore outfielder Hannah Griffith and freshman third baseman Breigh Houser to knot the game at 2-all.

In the next at-bat, GC sophomore designated player Karlie Barba smacked shot to left field and sophomore second baseman Samantha Gonzalez scored the game-winner and gave the Whitecaps an incredible 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Lady Senators.

GC freshman hurler Jenna Johnston pitched a complete seven-inning game, allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out four batters to register the win and improve to 26-6 on the season.

WSCC pitcher Tori Coffman held GC scoreless for the first six innings of the game, striking out a dozen Whitecaps, before the blue-and-orange tagged the Lady Senators hurler for three runs in the final inning. Coffman was credited with the loss and fell to 19-4 on the year.
